“Perhaps the most adaptable aspect of an infinitely adaptable religion, Jewish houses of worship have taken virtually every shape and form – from the Biblically mandated traveling Tabernacle (Mishkan) to the Holy Temple (Bait HaMikdash) to the wondrously diverse temples and synagogues of Israel and the Diaspora.

In Pittsburgh, it’s hardly been different.  Beginning in the 19^th Century, Pittsburgh Jewry has used multiple platforms upon which to build its houses of prayer, study, and community.  After a brief discussion of the history of Jewish neighborhoods in the city, including the Hill, which once housed 24 distinct synagogues, we’ll use my own book, Pittsburgh Prays to examine three paradigmatic places – Congregation Rodef Sholom, Congregation Poale Zedeck, and Temple Emanuel (including its marvelously inventive architect Dan Rothschild).”
