SUMMARY:Embrace Relief Donation Deadline
DESCRIPTION:The fundraiser through Temple is now closed. As a community we raised over $5000 for Embrace Relief. If you would like to make a donation on your own\, please go to www.embracerelief.org. \nWe have watched the humanitarian disaster emerging in Turkey and Syria following this week’s devastating earthquakes with anguish. Many lives have been lost\, many more have been injured\, and too many around the world still wait to learn the fate of their loved ones.  We pray for those impacted by this natural disaster\, for the rescue workers who continue to labor tirelessly\, and for all those waiting with bated breath. \nUpon learning of this tragedy\, Rabbi Meyer reached out to our interfaith partners at the Turkish Cultural Center of Pittsburgh. United through the Hizmet movement and often living as political exiles separated from their families in Turkey\, participants in the Turkish Cultural Center share many of our values if not the particularlistic expression of our faith. Together this year we joined in a shared meal for Thanksgiving at St. Nicholas Cathedral\, learned about anti-racism efforts at St. Paul’s Church\, and rallied for gun violence prevention at Temple Emanuel…and the opportunity has arisen to stand together again. \nLeadership of the Turkish Cultural Center have asked for donations to Embrace Relief\, a Guidestar-platinum rated 501(c)3 directing resources to help the victims of these devastating earthquakes. \n

DESCRIPTION:Mainstream Jewry has encountered communities across the globe claiming to belong to the Jewish people or to be descendants of lost Israelite tribes\, who were exiled 2\,700 years ago\, for centuries. Who are these groups? How did they get “lost” or become isolated from the rest of known Jewry? And why have their claims been accepted or rejected? Sessions will cover the history and search for the Lost Tribes\, as well as communities ranging from India and Ethiopia to Africa and the Americas. \nInstructor Dr. Steven Klein is a Jewish educator and journalist with a Ph.D. in conflict management and negotiation from Bar-Ilan University. An adjunct instructor at Tel Aviv University and a senior editor at Haaretz English Edition\, he has contributed numerous articles to the newspaper on issues regarding Israeli society as well as regional and international conflict. \nFour one-hour sessions available in person and over Zoom \nTuesdays at 11:00 AM. (Join us at 10:30 AM for a nosh and community!) \nJanuary 24th and January 31st @ Temple Emanuel \nFebruary 14th and February 21st @ Beth El \nRegistration is $18 for the four sessions.
