DESCRIPTION:Sacred texts — those containing God’s name — are treated with the utmost care and reverence in Jewish tradition. When it’s time to retire a prayer book\, tanakh\, or other sacred work\, the most respectful way of saying goodbye is to bury these texts as we would a loved one. Burial is also the appropriate way to part with ritual items such as tallitot\, tefillin that cannot be repaired\, the scrolls from a mezuzah\, and more: anything containing God’s name. \nFor years\, Temple has been collecting such texts in boxes and storage in the tradition of a genizah. With sufficient quantity to make respectful use of a gravesite at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery\, we invite you to join us on Sunday\, October 23rd at 2:00pm to take part in this ritual. We will offer prayers and readings together to mark this occasion and invite you to bring the limited quantities of sacred texts or ritual items you might wish to part with. You can also bring a small box to Temple at your convenience before October 23rd anytime the office is open. Not sure if something should be buried? Please wear sturdy shoes. \nBecause Gilkeson Road is so busy\, this clean up is open to individuals 12 and over. \nWhen: Sunday\, November 13th at 1:30 pm \nWhere: Meet us at the loop for Iroqouis Park at the end of Iroqouis Drive. \nTo get to the loop for Iroqouis Park\, turn down Sunnyhill Dr from Washington Rd by the Unitarian Universalist Church. From Sunnyhill Dr\, you’ll keep right onto Seminole Dr. Keep left onto Iroqouis Dr and continue until you see the loop. Parking is available there. \nWho: Anyone over 12 is welcome!

SUMMARY:Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh:  Volunteers Needed
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh provides women and their children a safe place to go as an emergency shelter from domestic abuse. More than that\, they provide support groups\, legal advocacy\, and programming for the adults and children in their care. We have the opportunity to give back to these families and to the center by providing dinner for these survivors. \nTheir dinner service begins at 4:30 pm\, so we need to arrive on site with our ingredients to start preparing dinner at 3:30 pm. We will then serve the residents\, and depending on the weather\, we may have an opportunity to sit and eat with them. If the weather is nice and we can eat outside\, we can eat with the residents and their families to share the meal. If we are eating inside\, due to Covid restrictions\, we will won’t be able to eat with them. \nWe will plan the menu for the meal\, but the shelter suggests that whatever we plan\, there are customizable options to account for different allergies\, food restrictions\, and preferences. For example\, a taco bar with a couple of different filling options and various toppings. \nMasks are required during our visit. Volunteers 16 years and older of any gender are welcome. This would be a great opportunity for a high school aged person to acquire some community service hours! \nPlease let Sarah know if you plan to join so we can meal plan. We need a minimum of 3 volunteers and a maximum of 8 for this opportunity. \nSarah’s hope is that we will be able to provide more meals for these women throughout the year\, and there are many other opportunities for volunteering at the shelter\, including organizing supplies\, cleaning\, and planning parties for the residents and their children. Please let Sarah know if you are interested in future opportunities for helping these survivors of domestic abuse.

DESCRIPTION:VolunTOTs is a volunteer organization for children 3-6 and their families\, providing age-appropriate opportunities for giving back to the community and tikkun olam. VolunTYKEs\, which is part of the same organization\, provides the same types of opportunities\, but for children 7-12. Temple Emanuel is teaming up with this organization and both of its branches–VolunTOTs and VolunTYKEs–to offer an opportunity to provide Thanksgiving Day meals for families in the Pittsburgh region facing food insecurity. We will be sorting and packing Thanksgiving boxes.Sign-up through the VolunTOTs website by November 11th to join us!
